| KANSAS FOOD BANK PROGRAMS FOOD 4 KIDS -- Food 4 Kids was established for students who are food insecure and who are not getting sufficient food outside of school on a regular basis. The Food Bank provides food and supplies to Food 4 Kids schools in Kansas, which are operated in partnership with community schools. KID'S KITCHENS -- Over the past 10 years, the Kansas Food Bank's outreach to kids has expanded to meet the needs of school children who are not getting sufficient food outside of school on a regular basis. RURAL DELIVERY -- In 1995, Governor Graves appointed a task force to look into the results of a study that showed that one in 22 Kansas children were at risk of being hungry each month. The task force determined the primary reason for hunger was that otherwise available food was not accessible to people in poverty in rural Kansas. URBAN FOOD RECOVERY - Begun initially as a pilot project in cooperation with a local restaurant chain to determine its feasibility, our recovery program has moved on to fast-forward. This activity, which collects frozen unsold, unserved meals and delivers them via the Food Banks refrigerated van to selected hungerrelief agencies, has grown to 27 participating food service establishments in the Greater Wichita Area. With all the special health provisions required for handling cooked food, our Urban Food Recovery program is a brand new kind of rescue operation for your Food Bank, but were learning and were pleased to do so! Even though it is a relatively costly program, compared to others, the urban effort does rescue food and help people. And thats what we do. |
