| The Kansas Food Bank is a mobile force against hunger. Every year it moves millions of pounds of food along a distribution system that serves 86 Kansas counties--73,000 square miles. It has fashioned a distribution system for getting food where it will do the most good in the fastest, most reliable and most cost-effective way possible. It has invested in and nurtured a remarkably self-sufficient Eastern Regional Center in Indepen-dence where more than a half-million pounds of food are received every year from the Food Bank¹s Central Distribution System in Wichita. The work force in Independence then oversees its distribution to those in the Southeast Kansas area who are threatened with hunger. Elsewhere in the state, the Food Bank has established drop-off points and depots and a rural delivery program. The task for those fighting hunger is as much about distribution as it is supply. The mission of the Kansas Food Bank is to keep improving the efficiency of its distribution system until we can reach and help everyone who can¹t afford to buy the food they need.
